The Journey of 1,000 Miles Begins With a Single Step
Patience and fortitude conquer all things. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Welcome to 2012! I know many of you have new goals for the new year. This is the year you're gonna quit smoking, get in shape, be more compassionate and forgiving, stay organized, etc.
At least for the month of January.
By the time February rolls around, you'll be back to your old habits. =)
Or not.
Whatever you're hoping to accomplish in 2012, it's important to understand that everything in life is a process. A caterpillar doesn't become a butterfly overnight. A lump of coal has to endure heat and pressure over a long period of time in order to reach its "diamond destiny."

And you're no different.
(I expand on this idea in chapters 15 and 16 of my book Your Truth Will Set You Free.)
Keep this "coal to diamond" metaphor in your mind as you work on improving your habits in 2012. You're going to have days where you don't feel motivated to stick to your goals. You're even gonna have days where you backslide into your old habits.
But don't let one "off" day ruin your momentum, or cause you to give up completely.
This is where your mental fortitude (strength of mind) comes into play. You're responsible for choosing your thoughts; you're the one who gives meaning to the events of your life.
If you have an "off" day, where you don't feel motivated ... give yourself a break. Remind yourself (as in, reprogram your mind) that creating new lifestyle habits isn't a sprint race — it's more like a marathon.
A caterpillar has to be patient as it naturally evolves into a beautiful butterfly. It has to naturally adjust to its new wings. If you were to attach a new set of wings onto a caterpillar, it wouldn't know how to use them — and it would fail in its attempt to fly.
2012 is here. Your butterfly destiny awaits you. It's just gonna take some time. No need to rush.
The journey of 1,000 miles begins with the first step. Just take a few steps each day. =)
