Dare to Be Different
There is no great genius without some touch of madness. ~ Seneca
I'm 3/4 of the way through the Steve Jobs' biography (by Walter Isaacson). Before reading it, I didn't really know much about the man. I've never owned a Mac or an i-Phone, and I never get caught up in the hype about the latest gadget.
A former girlfriend (a Mac, i-Phone, and i-Pad junkie) recommended the book, mentioning the eerie similarities between Jobs and me. After a couple chapters, I was hooked.
We are alike: eccentric perfectionist know-it-alls who embrace simplicity, appreciate art, design & detail, who are also prone to be control-freak asshole-rebels when people can't comprehend our vision.

I will say, however, that I don't berate people the way Steve did, or destroy their confidence by saying their ideas "are shit." He really lacked elegance in that regard. I've learned there are better ways to help people align with your vision.
I often wonder if his ruthless ways of dealing with people contributed to his cancer. Staying in a hostile mindset, or always being on edge, can't be good for one's health.
Aside from that, let's focus on Jobs' philosophy, and Apple's slogan: THINK DIFFERENT.
It was Jobs' alignment with this philosophy that caused Apple to capitalize on the status-quo ideas regarding the music industry (i-Pod), the cell phone industry (i-Phone), and the "everything that's left" industry (i-Pad). He refused to listen to (or even negotiate with) the naysayers. Now Apple dominates them all.
Jobs stuck to his vision. He couldn't be swayed by some of the most powerful people on the planet.
Steve Jobs changed the world.
Here's an Apple commercial the sums up his philosophy.
Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels. The trouble makers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them… because they change things, they push the human race forward.
While some may see them as “the crazy
ones”, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world – are the ones who do. ~ Steve Jobs
Dare to be different.
