Tebow 3:16 : A Lesson in Humility for Us All

Pride makes us artificial, and humility makes us real. ~ Thomas Merton

I just love Timmy Tebow.

Since my Redskins are done for the season, I had to choose an NFL team to pull for throughout the playoffs. Based on my personal experience with Tim Tebow (you can read about that in Chapter 31 of my book YTWSYF), in conjunction with his winning attitude, I decided to be a Broncos fan for the duration of the season.

I expressed my love for Timmy on my Facebook and Twitter pages yesterday, which sparked a debate, in which, even I sarcastically poked fun at religion. You know, Timmy prays (thanks God) after a touchdown, but doesn't pray after an interception, meaning God must've been in the kitchen cooking popcorn and other football-watching delicatessens.

Nevertheless, I'm a Tebow fan. Being an Alabama fan means I'm also an SEC fan, which is where Timmy comes from — The University of Florida. Even though he won the Heisman (awarded to the best college football player in the nation), Tebow was criticized when he entered the NFL draft, most analysts saying he "would never be a quarterback in the NFL."

That always rubbed me the wrong way. Tebow dominated the competition in college. Taking into consideration his winning attitude, I always felt like he could evolve into a quality NFL quarterback.

Now that he's been given a chance this season — he's proving his haters wrong.

Tebow has dealt with some of the most unfair criticism I've ever seen bestowed upon a professional athlete. And for what? Because he's a Christian who wears his faith on his sleeve? I went through a hard-core religious streak, and I felt compelled to share my experiences on my own radio show. In fact, a good portion of both of my books is peppered with Scripture. I chose to share my experiences because they rang true for me — and I hoped that I'd be able to inspire others to elevate the quality of their thoughts and corresponding decisions, which would, thereby, elevate the quality of their life-experience.

Would society rather have a professional athlete who publicly displays his affection for money, hoes, and clothes?

Oh, wait. They've already approved that.

Even with all the haters and naysayers, Tebow keeps his humble disposition, which is a reflection of his faith, and a tribute to the life of Jesus. After helping his team reach the playoffs for the first time in years, and staging an overtime victory against the favored Pittsburgh Steelers (in which he passed for 316 yards), Timmy had the following to say:

"I'm just blessed to be the quarterback for the Denver Broncos, and play in a game in front of such great fans and great teammates."

A lesson in humility for us all.

Keep up the great work, Timmy. =)
